Associate Professor Liam C. Kelley of the Institute of Asian Studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (IAS @ UBD) has recently co-edited a special section of four articles for the journal Suvannabhumi: Multi-disciplinary Journal of Southeast Asian Studies on “Globalization, Vietnam and ASEAN.”
The four articles were first presented at the 12th Engaging With Vietnam conference, an annual conference series that Dr. Kelley co-organizes with the conference founder, Senior Professor Phan Le Ha of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) at UBD, and jointly a research associate at IAS.
The 12th Engaging With Vietnam conference was held virtually in 2021, in conjunction with the 12th International Convention of Asia Scholars conference (ICAS), with the theme of “Engaging With Vietnam and ASEAN: Mobilities and Identities in an Age of Global Transformation.”
The four papers in Suvannabhumi reflect the broad theme of the conference, as they deal with issues concerning Vietnam and ASEAN ranging from deglobalization, to China’s Digital Silk Road initiative, to global tourist representations, to identity and the Chinese diaspora.
Among the articles in this special section is one by Assistant Professor Hannah Ming Yit Ho of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at UBD entitled “Reframing Loss: Chinese Diaspora Identity in K. H. Lim’s Written in Black.”
This special section was edited by Dr. Kelley together with Senior Lecturer Catherine Earl of RMIT Vietnam and Associate Professor Jamie Gillen of the University of Auckland. The Journal, Suvannabhumi, is edited by Distinguished Professor Victor T. King of IAS, and Dr. King also wrote an introduction to this special section.
Suvannabhumi is an open access journal, and the articles are available here.
