The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam is a research institute dedicated to producing and disseminating cutting-edge knowledge about the societies, economies, politics, cultures and histories of the Asian region. As a research institute, we are interested in candidates who are very productive in research and publish in top academic journals, who have a solid experience in international collaboration and who can contribute to the IAS “Asia in transition” Springer book series.

The Institute of Asian Studies is looking for talented researchers and dedicated lecturers in the following areas:
1) Human-nature interaction and biodiversity in Borneo
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in social sciences, environmental or development studies from a recognised university, with a notable record of research productivity and teaching excellence.
The candidate will undertake independent research and teaching on human-nature interactions in the context of sustaining and developing biodiversity in Borneo and the neighbouring areas of Sundaland, (in Malaysia, Indonesia and the southern Philippines). Of particular interest is the ability of the candidate to conceptualize the environments of Borneo as eco-cultural landscapes. The candidate is expected to undertake research on local communities, their cultures and local knowledge as important contributions to biodiversity conservation. The candidate’s research might also address a range of contemporary issues affecting the populations and landscapes of the island: among others, urbanization and land use changes; the effects of deforestation; protected areas; conservation tourism; ecosystem services.
The successful applicant should be able to teach modules in a trans-disciplinary way in areas of the social sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as well as related course(s) in other Faculties in UBD. Active participation in the Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) including research, seminars and administration is also required. The position is open for Assistant Professor only.
2) Asian Migration, Mobility, and Diaspora
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a related field from a recognised university, with a notable record of research productivity and teaching excellence.
The migration of people, ideas and capital have been a critical influence in the development of Asia, both in the past and present. In the age of globalisation Asians have experienced inter-regional and social mobility, and established diasporic communities in global cities. IAS is looking for a scholar in Asian migration in Asia who can embrace the interactions between migration, mobility and diaspora. The candidate should have a particular interest in issues relevant to migration and mobility such as education, skilled/professional labour, industry, and lifestyle adaptations.
The successful applicant should be able to teach modules in a trans-disciplinary way in areas of the social sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as well as related course(s) in other Faculties in UBD. Active participation in the Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) including research, seminars and administration is also required. The position is open for Assistant Professor and Senior Assistant Professor only.
3) East Asian Studies
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology, History, Geography, Economics, or a related social-science discipline from a recognised university, with a notable record of research productivity and teaching excellence.
The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) at the Universiti of Brunei Darussalam is seeking to hire a scholar of the humanities or social sciences with expertise in East Asia. The area of specialization includes, but is not limited to cultural studies, religious studies, international relations, language and culture, trans-Asian studies, regional integration and globalisation. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate enthusiasm to contribute to multi-disciplinary projects on issues in trans-Asian contexts, and who have a vision for Asian Studies in the 21st century.
The successful applicant should be able to teach modules in a trans-disciplinary way in areas of the social sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as well as related course(s) in other Faculties at UBD. Active participation in the activities of the Institute of Asian Studies including research, seminars and administration is also required. The position is open for all levels: Assistant Professor, Senior Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor.
