Corruption and Illegality in Asian Investment Arbitration: Book Launch and Symposium

On 28 May 2024, the Institute of Asian Studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (IAS @ UBD) co-organised a conference, “Corruption and Illegality in Asian Investment Arbitration: Book Launch and Symposium” with UBD School of Business and Economics (SBE) and the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) at the Golden Jubilee Hall in the Law and Courts Building in Bandar Seri Begawan. 

The IAS-SBE International Symposium on “Academic Perspectives on Corruption and Foreign Direct Investment in the Asia-Pacific Region” on 29 May 2023 has culminated in a conference volume entitled “Corruption and Illegality in Asian Investment Arbitration (Springer, 2024)”. This AGC-IAS-SEB event celebrated the book’s successful publication with invited chapter contributors and local experts, such as IAS Eminent Visiting Professors Dr Michael Hwang SC, Professors Luke Nottage and Simon Butt (Sydney Law School) and Justice Anselmo Reyes (Singapore International Commercial Court). The celebration was followed by knowledge-sharing sessions in which the contributors discussed diverse issues on corruption and other serious misconduct in Asian investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), based on the book chapters but including the latest updates. 

The symposium was attended by 100 speakers and guests from Brunei and abroad, including Attorney General Yang Berhormat Datin Paduka Dayang Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Mohammed Taib (who kindly launched the book) as the guest of honour,  and Vice Chancellor Dr Hazri bin Haji Kifle and Solicitor General Hajah Zuraini binti Haji Sharbawi as distinguished guests.

This event was organised by Assistant Professor Dr Nobumichi Teramura and Associate Professor Dr Bruno Jetin of IAS, with administrative support from IAS Director Dk Dr Noor Hasharina binti Pg Hj Hassan (IAS Director), Datin Paduka Dayang Hajah Suhana binti Haji Sudin (AGC) and Siti Munirah binti Abu Bakar (AGC).
