Chun Sheng (CS) Goh’s career encompasses diverse roles in research, education, government, and intergovernmental organisations. He began his career as a researcher at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He participated in research projects on international trade and large-scale investments in food, fibre, and bio-energy, for which he dedicated significant time to field studies in Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan). Concurrently, he supported the operations of IEA Bioenergy Task 40, focusing on international bioenergy trade. CS earned his Ph.D. with a dissertation titled ‘Monitoring the Bio-economy: Assessing Local and Global Biomass Flows, Land-use Change, Carbon Impacts, and Future Land Resources.’ Subsequently, he worked at Malaysia’s National Agency of Innovation, where he was responsible for executing the National Biomass Strategy 2020, with a special focus on Malaysian Borneo.
CS then spent several years at the United Nations University (Tokyo), Harvard University, and Sunway University – Jeffrey Sachs Centre (Malaysia), conducting independent research on bio- and nature-based economies in East and Southeast Asia, with a special focus on the Borneo Island, while contributing professional reports to organisations such as FAO, IRENA, WWF, UNSDSN, Forever Sabah. His first monograph, ‘Transforming Borneo: From Land Exploitation to Sustainable Development,’ was published in Singapore in early 2023. At Sunway, he also led and managed the master’s program in Sustainable Development Management. CS has been a frequent contributor of columns to newspapers and media outlets, such as the Borneo Post, Mongabay, Think China.
In 2023-2025, CS served as Programme Officer at International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) based in Bonn, Germany.
