Discourses, Agency and Identity in Malaysia: Critical Perspectives<\/strong><\/em> seeks to break new ground, both empirically and conceptually, in examining discourses of identity formation and the agency of critical social practices in Malaysia. Taking an inclusive cultural studies perspective, it questions the ideological narrative of \u2018race\u2019 and \u2018ethnicity\u2019 that dominates explanations of conflicts and cleavages in the Malaysian context.<\/p>

The contributions are organised in the following three broad themes:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u2018Identities in Contestation: Borders, Complexities and Hybridities\u2019 takes a range of empirical studies\u2014literary translation, religion, gender, ethnicity, indigeneity and sexual orientation\u2014to break down preconceived notions of fixed identities.<\/p>

\u2018Identities and Movements: Agency and Alternative Discourses\u2019 deals with counter-hegemonic social movements\u2014of antiracism, young people, environmentalism and independent publishing\u2014that explicitly seek to open up greater critical, democratic space within the Malaysian polity.<\/p>

\u2018Identities and Narratives: Culture and Media\u2019 provides a close textual reading of some exemplars of new cultural and media practices found in personal testimonies, popular music, film, radio programming and storytelling who have consciously created bodies of work that question the dominant national narrative.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
